My own theory about these contraptions is that they were often masterminded by a cabal of rogue civil suit lawyers.

Who could resist filing lawsuits over the torrent of disfigurements and busloads of once exuberant pre-adolescents with cracked skulls, lacerated shins and fingers and mangled limbs?
