I've studied WW2 extensively, and by far the best way to get a view of it is through the personal anecdotes of those who lived it.
At one of my history lectures many years ago, we had a veteran speak, he'd gone ashore at Dieppe in August of 1942. I also had the privilege of learning to sail from an ex-officer of a Canadian corvette who'd spent time in the North Atlantic.
It's mind-bending, some of the stories, and makes you wonder how the younger generation today would turn out in some of the situations.
