The Count of Monte Christo is a GREAT book. I love the authors of this time period. Their books were often published as chapters in newspapers, so as to reach a wider audience. And, as they were paid by submissions, the longer the story, the greater the revenue stream. Also, people had fewer distractions so reading took greater prevalence than today.
